It has few seeds and a sprightly, moderately sweet flavor. It has become the leading mandarin variety in Florida. It was first planted in Palatka, Fla., around 1843, but was named in 1867 after the grower G.L. This deep orange-red fruit with the taut, glossy, thin skin has become the standard of the ''tangerine'' in the United States. They are sometimes called the ''candy fruit'' and used in chic restaurants to make tarts and cakes.ĭancy. Clementines are deeply orange-red, sweet, meltingly tender and very aromatic. The only notable differences are that oranges have more vitamin C and soluble fiber while tangerines contain more calories and vitamin A per serving.In Central Florida, tall, healthy trees covered with fruit that never seems to be picked are usually sour orange trees.
